(YouPostTheNews) – INDEPENDENCE, MO (WDAF/NBC) - An animal with a stone-cold heart was a threat to police in Missouri over the weekend.

Rick Sheridan was working in his garage when he heard gunshots on Sunday.

Police in Independence were firing at his concrete alligator. They mistook the lawn ornament for the real deal.

"The officer fired two rounds, and killed my concrete, ornamental alligator," Sheridan said.

The officers were responding to calls of an alligator sighting and got permission from the state's Conservation Department to fire.

Sheridan says he placed the fake alligator on his property to keep trespassers away. The "No Trespassing" signs he put up in the past were knocked down by vandals.

Sheridan says he will patch up the gator.
